Internet / World Wide Web / Wi-Fi / Bluetooth
Internet / WWW
- The internet is a global network of interconnected computers
network, and these use "standardized communication" protocols to
connect all these different devices worldwide. The internet was not
founded by an individual. It was founded by different people who
contributed to create it. Some of them are: ARPANET (1960s), TCP/IP
(1970s).
- The internet was primarily used for research, academic
collaboration, and military purposes. On the other hand, today the
internet is used for different purposes such as communication (email,
social media, video conferencing), information access (search engines,
online encyclopedias), entertainment (streaming services, online gaming),
e-commerce, education, and more.
- World Wide Web is a system of interconnected documents and
resources, whose are linked through hyperlinks and URLs (Uniform Resource
Locators). This web gives users the access for different content such as
multimedia, text, images, videos, and different kind of applications.
World Wide Web (WWW) was founded in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee. Tim is a
British computer scientist that worked at CERN (The European Organization
For Nuclear Research). The main purpose of this creation was to facilitate
information sharing among scientists whose were working on different
experiments.
- The internet and WWW are not the same. As mentioned earlier, the
Internet is the global infrastructure, while the World Wide Web is a
system of interconnected documents and resources that exist on the
Internet. In other words, the World Wide Web needs the internet to exist.
They work together, since the WWW is one of the services that internet
offers, and it relies on the internet to deliver data to users.
- The first website was created in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, but it was
not a public website. The first public website was created in 1991, which
was basically an introduction to the World Wide Web. The original website
is no longer available, but CERN recreated it. It can be found athttp://info.cern.ch](http://info.cern.ch).
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth and Lamarr
Hedy
Lamarr and her Connection to WiFi and Bluetooth:
- Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor. While she
is not directly connected to the development of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, her
work in the field of wireless communication technology had a significant
impact on their development. Although the technology was not widely
adopted during the war, it laid the foundation for modern wireless
communication, including technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There is a
song that Johnny Deep wrote highlighting Lamarr's beauty, as the website
Auralcrave states "Hedy
Lamarr was a genius, imprisoned in the appearance of a movie diva.
Her beauty became the cage that prevented the world to take seriously her
genie".
Bluetooth
- Bluetooth technology was developed in the 1990s, with key
contributions from engineers at Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications
company. Its name, "Bluetooth," draws inspiration from the
10th-century Danish king, Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, known for
uniting various tribes in Denmark and parts of Norway. The choice of this
name symbolizes the goal of uniting diverse communication devices. The
Bluetooth logo creatively combines Nordic runes representing the initials
"H" and "B," emphasizing the theme of unification
associated with King Harald Bluetooth.
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity):
- Wi-Fi technology was developed in the late 1990s by a group of
engineers and scientists associated with the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Its primary purpose was to enable wireless
connectivity for computer networks, eliminating the need for physical
cables to connect devices to the Internet.
Originally
known as "IEEE 802.11," the technical name was not user-friendly. To
make the technology more accessible to the public, the term "Wireless
Fidelity" was coined as a marketing slogan. Over time, "Wi-Fi"
became the widely adopted term for wireless Internet access.
The Wi-Fi
logo, commonly seen on wireless devices, is not an acronym but rather a design
element representing wireless connectivity. While it doesn't stand for anything
specific, it serves as a recognizable symbol for wireless networking.
